During these stressful months of COVID-19, children and youth are at much greater risk of abuse and exploitation. Stress caused by food, housing and job insecurities, as well as health concerns, increase risk for family violence. As children and youth spend more time online for entertainment and education, they are at greater risk for online sexual exploitation. Experiencing isolation and boredom, and seeking acceptance and friendship, predators manipulate youth to share sexually explicit images. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to talk to children and youth about all aspects of safety, including issues like COVID-19, bike safety, body safety and internet safety. For tips on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of child abuse, exploitation and neglect, see the attached materials. Also included is how to talk to children about abuse and exploitation and how to help keep children and youth safe online. If you suspect any form of child maltreatment, please call your local law enforcement agency, or report concerns for abuse in Washington to 866.ENDHARM, and in Oregon to 855.503.SAFE. If a child is in immediate risk of harm, call 911.

Arthur D. Curtis Children’s Justice Center is a nationally accredited Children’s Advocacy Center that provides a safe, child-focused place for alleged child victims of criminal-level abuse and their non-offending family members.

The Center’s multidisciplinary team of trained responders comes together from across agencies and jurisdictions to address crimes against children, including holding perpetrators accountable through the judicial system and sensitively considering children’s health and healing needs.

Center staff includes experts from Clark County, the City of Vancouver, Children’s Center, Children’s Home Society, Family Solutions, Legacy Salmon Creek and Washington State Department of Children and Family Services. Together they investigate cases, provide support services and help prosecute suspected felony child abuse perpetrators.
